"Basic Policy on Biodiversity"
Promoting biodiversity preservation activities and joining the Japan Business
Initiative for Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity (JBIB)*
Toppan Printing Co., Ltd. (hereafter Toppan Printing; head office: Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo; President & CEO: Naoki Adachi) established the Toppan Group "Basic Policy on Biodiversity" on April 1, 2010. In addition, on April 27, 2010, Toppan Printing joined the Japan Business Initiative for Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity (JBIB) in order to take a proactive approach to activities to preserve biodiversity.
In April 2009, Toppan Printing established "The Toppan Group Declaration on the Global Environment" and "Environmental Management Rules", and has promoted the strengthening of environmental conservation activities throughout the entire Toppan Group. With events such as the holding of the COP10 meeting in Nagoya in October 2010, there is growing attention on the preservation of biodiversity and it is necessary for companies to further strengthen their activities for biodiversity conservation.
As a company in the printing industry, Toppan Printing must consider the important links it has with living organisms such as in the procurement of raw materials including paper, water use and wastewater, the discharge of chemical substances, and the land and surrounding environments near its operational sites.
In order to make a firmer commitment to activities to preserve biodiversity, Toppan has established a basic policy with 6 points relating to conservation and sustainable use.
Basic Policy on Biodiversity
(1) The conservation of biodiversity is a part of management and is to be positioned as an important element of it.
(2) In the procurement of raw materials, we will take a proactive approach to sustainable use by avoiding or minimizing the impact on biodiversity.
(3) We will proactively undertake social contribution activities related to biodiversity.
(4) In our initiatives, we will use preventative and adaptive methods and take a long-term perspective.
(5) In our initiatives, we will give consideration to cooperation with various stakeholders with links to biodiversity such as local residents.
(6) In undertaking the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, we recognize that it contributes to the prevention of global warming and other efforts.
Toppan has also joined the Japan Business Initiative for Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity (JBIB) in order to undertake activities that are in line with the trends of industry and public offices as the group promotes activities to conserve biodiversity and strengthens initiatives.
Toppan Printing will aim to continue strengthening initiatives that consider the conservation of biodiversity, such as with promotion throughout the entire Toppan Group of the use of paper materials that show consideration for the preservation of forest environments.
* The Japan Business Initiative for Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity(JBIB) is a gathering of companies that act proactively to conserve biodiversity. At the COP8 meeting in 2006, a resolution encouraging the private sector to participate in activities was passed and the participation of companies is also required in Japan with The Third National Biodiversity Strategy of Japan (approved by the cabinet in November 2007) and the Basic Act on Biodiversity (established May, 2008). Looking towards the COP10 meeting that will be held in Nagoya in October 2010, in April 2008 the Japan Business Initiative for Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity was established as a corporate consortium.
As of May 2010, the number of member companies stands at 33, including Toppan Printing, with 12 network members, and the consortium undertakes activities to contribute to the conservation of biodiversity. (As of May 18)
