Eco-protection Activities

Toppan minimizes environmental burden associated with business activity under the name of Eco-protection activities. Medium-and-long-term environmental targets for FY2020 as well as environmental targets for each fiscal year are established in accordance with the Toppan Group Declaration on the Global Environment to prevent pollution, mitigate global warming, create a recycling-based society, manage chemical substances and protect biodiversity.

Mitigating Global Warming and Saving Energy

Saving Energy

Toppan reduces waste and loss to lower total carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The energy management system has been enhanced to promote transparency through operational measures for equipment, and energy-saving measures such as a policy of switching off unnecessary lighting and the review of air conditioner temperatures have been initiated to reduce power consumption.

Green curtains in summer, heat-shield window films, and coatings have been implemented to increase the efficiency of air conditioners, and Toppan continues to replace air conditioners, freezers, and boilers with high-efficiency models, adopt energy-saving equipment such as LED lights, and actively use renewable energy such as solar power generation.

CO2 Emissions

Building a Recycling-oriented Society

The greatest amount of waste discharged at Toppan is paper waste from operational sites in the Information & Networks and Living Environment segments, followed by waste plastic from Living Environment sites, and waste acid and alkali, including corrosive liquid, from operational sites responsible for Electronics. We focus on improving the material recycling rates*1 for waste plastic and reducing waste acid and alkali volumes through in-house processing, and are committed to continued enhancement of waste management at non-production sites such as offices.

Since fiscal 2012, Toppan has segmentalized its own certification criteria for zero-emission operational sites, which were originally set at a recycling rate of 98% or more.

By setting higher targets, we strengthen efforts to reduce waste discharge and promote recycling.

*1: Material Recycling: Toppan defines material recycling as the reuse of waste as raw materials. This definition covers all recycling except thermal recycling.

Preventing Pollution

Each Toppan site measures environmental burden to obtain an accurate understanding of the situation at the site. The Eco-protection Promotion Committee at each site sets in-house standards at stricter levels than those required by laws and regulations. By complying with these standards, Toppan operational sites contribute to the reduction of environmental burden and the prevention of pollution.

VOC and Toluene Emissions into the Atmosphere*1

Preventing Atmospheric Pollution

To prevent atmospheric pollution, Toppan controls boilers and other plant facilities responsible for smoke and soot by changing fuels and operating them under appropriate combustion conditions. We also work to enhance efficiency in effluent-gas treatment by replacing machinery and installing appropriate treatment equipment for facilities subject to the requirements stipulated by the Air Pollution Control Law of Japan.

*1 Emissions into the atmosphere are calculated in conformance with the standards established by the Japan Federation of Printing Industries (JFPI) and the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA).

Preventing Water and Groundwater Pollution

To prevent water pollution, Toppan has installed wastewater treatment facilities designed to cope with specific water consumption and pollutant conditions at individual sites, and wastewater recycling systems have been installed at Electronics plants that discharge significant amounts of effluents. By recovering and reusing wastewater via these systems, plants have been reducing levels of water consumption and effluent discharge.
Toppan also strives to prevent groundwater pollution by taking measures based on regulations related to structures for preventing underground water pollution in line with revisions to the Water Pollution Control Law of Japan, as well as other preventive measures.

Controlling Chemical Substances

Chemical Substances Designated under the PRTR Law*2

To manage chemical substances used in its operations, Toppan has established Standards for the Management of Chemical Components of Raw Materials and implements them in cooperation with suppliers. To reduce the risks of chemical substances, we also tighten control and reduce the handling amount of chemical substances specified by PRTR-related legislation. We strive to improve methods of handling and use alternatives to the designated chemical substances to reduce the amounts handled, emitted and transported.

*2: Because the units of aggregation differ, dioxine is not included in the chemical substances subject to the standard.

Promoting the Conservation of Biodiversity

Toppan carries out biodiversity conservation activities such as the establishment of a Basic Policy on Biodiversity and Paper Procurement Guidelines for the Sustainable Use of Forest Resources, as well as improvement of land use at operational sites.

We continue promoting the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
