Toppan’s eco-creativity activities promote development, assessment, sales and technical services for environmentally friendly products.

Toppan’s Basic Thinking on Environmentally Friendly Products

Based on ISO 14021, Toppan reviewed its originally devised 14 Environmental Points in fiscal 2013 and revised them as the Toppan Standards for Environmentally Friendly Products. In line with these, we develop products based on in-house standards established in consideration of the characteristics of the industries in which each of our divisions operate. The Ecology Center assesses the developed products and registers those that meet all of the criteria for "environmentally friendly products." Environmentally Friendly Product Certification Labels are attached to all of our environmentally friendly products. These labels fulfill accountability requirements while enlightening users on relevant environmental considerations.

Life-cycle Assessment

Toppan has been quantitatively assessing the environmental impact of production activities utilizing the life-cycle impact assessment (LIME) method*1 since FY2008 under the guidance of Norihiro Itsubo, Associate Professor at Tokyo City University. Our ultimate goal is an integral system capable of both comprehensive environmental impact assessment for production activities and life-cycle assessment (LCA)*2 for products.

Toppan received the LCA Society of Japan Chairman’s Award at the 9th LCA Society of Japan Awards sponsored by the Life Cycle Assessment Society of Japan (JLCA)*4 on November 30, 2012. The JLCA Awards recognize outstanding companies, organizations, and researchers that address the issue of reducing environmental burden by applying life-cycle assessment (LCA).

Toppan continues promoting the application of LCA for both business activities and individual products with the goal of achieving a sustainable society through the reduction of environmental burden and the provision of environmentally friendly products and services.

*1: Life-cycle impact assessment (LIME) method
The life-cycle impact assessment method is based on endpoint modeling developed for environmental conditions in Japan.
It is used to evaluate damage to endpoints such as human health and biodiversity caused by impact categories. Based on this, the environmental impact of multiple phenomena can then be integrated into one index.

*2: Life-cycle Assessment (LCA)
LCA is used to quantitatively assess the resources used and environmental burden discharged throughout the overall life cycle of individual products, from the procurement of raw materials to production, distribution, use, disposal, and recycling.

*3: The environmental impact of aluminum foil is set as 100. The range of assessment extends from the collection of raw material to film production processes.

*4 The Life Cycle Assessment Society of Japan (JLCA)
The Life Cycle Assessment Society of Japan (JLCA) was established as a platform for related parties in industry, academia, and national research institutions to come together to facilitate surveys, research, information exchange, education, and promotion of LCA and environmental efficiency, and to achieve a sustainable economic society.
Since FY2004, the JLCA has given awards to outstanding companies, organizations, and researchers that have contributed to reducing environmental burden by applying LCA.

The Carbon Footprint of Products System

Toppan was one of the first printing industry companies under the CFP Communication Program*5 to acquire Carbon Footprint of Products (CFP)*6 system certification in the Product Category Rule for Publishing, Commercial printing & Security printing products (work in process)*7 and Commercial printings & Security printing products*8 on November 16, 2012.

■ CFP System Certification

CFP system certification acknowledges that an internal system has been established to manage CFP through the stages of CFP quantification and verification up to application for CFP registration and disclosure through screening by a third party CFP system certification agency. After registering the system in the CFP Communication Program, companies and organizations are able to apply for registration and disclosure of the system without going through individual CFP validation procedures.

■ Future Goals

Toppan works in cooperation with partner companies and end clients to address social issues with the goal of achieving a sustainable society. We implement CFP quantification and publication through product pamphlets, etc. as a certified CFP system company, and intend to consider providing CFP registration and disclosure services for our customers’ products, such as printed items that Toppan handles for them.

*5: CFP Communication Program
The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry conducted a 3-year CFP label pilot project from FY2009. In FY2012, the CFP Communication Program, a Japanese private-sector CFP scheme undertaken by the Japan Environmental Management Association for Industry (JEMAI), started. This certification system promotes global warming countermeasures by companies aiming to achieve the shift to a low-carbon industrial structure and promote low carbon behavior by consumers. Individual companies calculate CFP based on the carbon footprint product category rule (CFP-PCR), and attach CFP labels after approval.

*6: Carbon Footprint of Products (CFP)
The carbon footprint of products (CFP) is an easy-to-understand indication of greenhouse gas emissions converted to CO2 emissions associated with the life cycle of products or services, from raw-material procurement, production, distribution, use and maintenance to disposal and recycling.

*7: Publishing Commercial printing & Security printing products (work in process)
The scope of this is limited to the stages of production in which printing companies can be involved for publications issued by publishers, printed matter used for advertising and promotion by companies, and Security printing.

*8: Commercial printings & Security printing products.
These include printed materials used by companies for advertising and sales promotion, such as product catalogs and pamphlets, environmental reports, and company brochures, and printed matter used in-house by companies for business, such as business reports and minutes, and Security printing such as bank book, voucher and certificate.
