The Environment

The Toppan Group Declaration on the Global Environment is the basic philosophy underpinning Toppan’s environmental preservation activities aimed at achieving a sustainable society. Our activities focus on four areas: Environmental Management, Eco-protection, Eco-creativity, and Environmental Communication.

The Toppan Group Declaration on the Global Environment

In the 1990s, with increasing activity related to environmental conservation on a global scale, the scope of areas to be tackled by businesses grew significantly. Toppan Printing also redeveloped its previous environmental conservation activities, establishing the Ecology Center in 1991, and setting out the Toppan Declaration on the Global Environment in 1992 as the basic philosophy for environmental conservation activities.

Following this, in 2000, when Toppan Printing marked 100 years since its founding, the company promoted activities by reviewing the Toppan Declaration on the Global Environment at the same time as establishing the Corporate Philosophy, Corporate Creed and Conduct Guidelines. Targeting a sustainable society in which every form of life can continue to exist in the future, the company has now devised a new Toppan Group Declaration on the Global Environment as a framework for the entire Group and declared a more proactive approach to preservation of the global environment.

Environmental Management Activities

Toppan has established and instituted an environmental management system in accordance with environmental management rules and focuses on continuous improvement via the PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Action) cycle. Ongoing review by top management ensures the effectiveness of the PDCA cycle in maintaining the quality of the environmental management system. Toppan’s Ecology Center regularly compiles data on the performance of environmental activities and the results are evaluated and verified by the director in charge of the Center . The director in charge of the Ecology Center then reports these results to the board of directors and necessary improvements are implemented on a company-wide basis.

Toppan strives to minimize environmental burden in its business operations through eco-protection activities that target the effective management of chemical substances, conservation of biodiversity, prevention of pollution, mitigation of global warming, and creation of a recycling-based society.

We also aim to lower CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions by promoting activities in line with the greenhouse gas reduction targets set out by the Japanese Act on Promotion of Global Warming Countermeasures and other legislation. We pursue waste recycling activities that include significant reductions in final landfill waste disposal and the achievement of zero emissions at 58 operational sites (as of the end of July 2015).

To prevent pollution, we have set and strive to meet our own in-house standards that are even stricter than the laws for environmental impacts including wastewater and emissions into the atmosphere. We have enhanced management and reduced the use of chemical substances specified in PRTR-related legislation, emphasize sustainability of forest resources in paper procurement, and give consideration to the conservation of biodiversity in the use of land at our sites.

Eco-creativity Activities

Eco-creativity activities emphasize the development and promotion of environmentally friendly products and services, as well as initiatives that support the environmental activities of our customers. In line with our original Environmental Points based on ISO 14021, we strive to develop environmentally friendly products and services in accordance with in-house criteria established in consideration of the special characteristics of the products and services of each division. The products and services developed are evaluated inside the company, and those meeting the criteria are certified and sold as environmentally friendly products and services.

In our Environmental Communication Activities we aim to share an awareness of the importance of environmental initiatives with stakeholders through educational activities both inside and outside the group, and activities that promote coexistence with local communities. Environmental Communication Activities include industry-government-academic-private sector collaborations, the publication of CSR reports, reports on environmental activities to local residents, and participation in exhibitions and environmental consortiums.
