Expanding Toppan's Consigned Filling Service with High-Speed Cartocan Filling Machines

Cartcan

The Cartocan paper-based beverage container is able to store product content for long periods at normal temperature. The Cartocan made its market debut in 1996, and has been well received throughout Japan and elsewhere. In fact, in October 1998, Toppan initiated a commission-based filling operation in Kyushu to meet the rising demand for the Cartocan filling service. Recently, we also developed an aseptic high-speed filling machine jointly with Shikoku Kakoki Co., Ltd. The machine is now fully operational at the Mori Nyugyo factory, one of our commissioned Cartocan filling plants, where it works in conjunction with a number of conventional filling machines.

The new, high-speed machine fills 21,600 cans per hour, a threefold increase over the filling rate by conventional units. Drawing on the unique functionality of Toppan's Cartocan and the advanced filling-machine development skills of Shikoku Kakoki, the filling machine is the world's fastest for use with paper-based liquid containers. In addition to its high-speed filling function, the machine promotes a high level of quality control by allowing an aseptic environment and improved line operation.

The unique Cartocan has indeed taken root in the market. Importantly, consumers recognize the difference between Cartocan and other containers. For example, the product "tastes" different when packed in a Cartocan, since the container is filled in an aseptic environment. As we enter the 21st century, Toppan will be working to reduce costs and meet the diverse needs of our customers, while developing applications in non-beverage fields and capturing a bigger share of the overseas market.
